\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a>Westley and I embarked on our trip to Germany on Father\u2019s Day, stopping for bun mee<\/a> and MTG<\/a> in SFO<\/a> before our 11-hour flight to Munich to rendezvous with Melody. We picked up our VW convertible<\/a>, settled into our artist apartment<\/a>, then set out to explore Marienplatz<\/a> and nearby Asamkirche<\/a>, St. Peterskirche<\/a>, and Frauenkirche<\/a>, followed by kaiserspatzle and crispy pork at Viktualienmarkt<\/a> for lunch. BMW did not offer factory tours<\/a> this week, so we checked out BMW Welt<\/a> instead and slurped Max\u2019s beef noodles<\/a> before turning in early. Not having adjusted our biological clocks, we awoke at 2am Tuesday and kept ourselves busy until breakfast at Caf\u00e9 Rischart<\/a> with weisswurst<\/a> and kaiserschmarrn<\/a> ahead of our morning tour of the Munich Residenz<\/a>. The Rathaus glockenspiel<\/a> was underwhelming as I expected, but at least put us back near Viktualienmarkt for shweinwurst<\/a>, leberkassemmel<\/a>, and liver dumpling soup<\/a> for lunch. After a short nap, we headed to the kid-friendly Deutsches Museum<\/a> to explore the science of aviation, bridges, particle physics, and musical instruments, followed by dinner at Zum Alten Markt<\/a> for delicious mushroom soup, crispy schnitzel, and more kaiserspatzle. On Wednesday, we sped through the autobahn and steep climb up Neuschwanstein Castle<\/a> to catch our timed tour of the iconic Bavarian palace, including an impressive throne room and singer\u2019s hall. We squeezed past other tourists to snap photos from Marienbrucke Bridge<\/a>, then rested our legs at Caf\u00e9 Kainz<\/a> over spatzle and spaghetti on the way to tour Hohenschwangau Castle<\/a>, from where Ludwig II<\/a> observed his fairytale palace. After a sunny treetop walk<\/a> across the Austrian border at Walderlebniszentrum<\/a>, Westley cooled his feet at the alluvial forest trail<\/a>, while I detoured to photograph Lechfall<\/a> and bring back ice-cream. We barely made the last English tour at Linderhof Palace<\/a> and its gardens, and enjoyed a traditional costume parade passing by our dinner<\/a> in Oberammergau<\/a>. We relaxed with a serene boat ride on Lake K\u00f6nigssee<\/a> on Thursday, with a short hike from Salet<\/a> to Lake Obersee<\/a>, before returning to Seel\u00e4nde<\/a> for crepes and bubble waffles. At the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines<\/a>, we donned overalls to ride the miner\u2019s train, slide, and raft across an underground \u201cmirror lake,\u201d but sadly left our souvenir alpensalz<\/a> behind. Our day concluded in Salzburg, where we ate Barenwirt\u2019s<\/a> famed fried chicken, braved the catacombs<\/a> at St. Peter’s Abbey<\/a>, and learned about Mozart at his birthplace<\/a>, before crossing Makartsteg Bridge<\/a> to Mirabelle Gardens<\/a> where the Sound of Music<\/a> was filmed. Marionette shows<\/a> were sold out, so we drove back to Munich for pho<\/a> and to pack up our belongings in preparation for the Black Forest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
